Healthcare
Access, Reach, and Impact.
Hijas del Campo took proactive steps to identify and address the needs of our CampesinXs during the lockdown. These initiatives included outreach efforts, on-site vaccination clinics, and partnerships with the Contra Costa Health Department and other key collaborators. Our programs are designed to be accessible, featuring bilingual staff and culturally sensitive services tailored to our CampesinX. Looking ahead, we are committed to continuously adapting our healthcare programs to meet the changing needs of our community, while strengthening our partnerships with local health departments and organizations to broaden our reach and impact.
Statistics
Farmworkers in the U.S. face significant challenges accessing healthcare besides facing numerous occupational hazards.
47%
Health Insurance Access
According to the National Agricultural Workers Survey (NAWS), only 47% of farmworkers have health insurance. Many rely on public health programs or remain uninsured.
Less than 20% of farmworkers report receiving routine preventive healthcare.
x20
Death from Heat-Related Illnesses
Farmworkers are 20 times more likely to die from heat-related illnesses compared to the general workforce (CDC). Over 80% of surveyed farmworkers experienced symptoms of heat stress.
10,000+
Pesticide-Related Illnesses
The CDC estimates 10,000-20,000 pesticide-related illnesses occur among U.S. agricultural workers each year. Chronic exposure has been linked to respiratory problems, skin conditions, and long-term risks such as cancer and neurological disorders.
Initiatives
Our Key Healthcare Programs
-
Mobile Health Clinic
Through our collaboration with Contra Costa Healthcare for the Homeless, we provide direct healthcare services through our Mobile Clinic, which visits our office every Tuesday and on the fifth Thursday of each month. Services include health-related referrals, physician consultations, and, since September 2024, access to a mental health therapist. We are currently engaging in talks with mobile clinics across San Joaquin County to broaden supportive care for CampesinO families living in this area.
-
Facilitating access to HealthCare Options
In collaboration with Contra Costa Health Services, La Clínica de la Raza, and Brighter Beginnings, HDC links clients to enrollment specialists for Medi-Cal or Covered California applications. Additionally, we offer weekly enrollment services at our headquarters. Our Health Initiatives Manager and CHW’s are essential in providing direct outreach, education, and enrollment assistance to clients each day. To maintain and grow our ability to provide these vital services to a greater number of individuals in need, we depend on donor and grant funding.
-
Testing and Vaccination Support
From 2021 to 2023, Hijas del Campo (HDC) organized 19 COVID-19 vaccine clinics, successfully vaccinating more than 1,200 community members, distributing PPE and providing COVID tests. We are still hosting vaccine clinics today, offering flu shots COVID-19 and vaccinations for children. These efforts are a cornerstone of our commitment to ensuring the health and safety of our community, particularly because of the barriers faced when accessing healthcare. In addition to vaccinations, we also offer educational resources to inform community members about preventive health measures and the importance of maintaining up-to-date vaccinations.
-
Kaiser Permanente’s Community Health Care Plan
In 2023, Hijas Del Campo partnered with Kaiser Permanente as a Community Based Organization (CBO). Our partnership assists eligible undocumented individuals enrolling in the Kaiser Permanente Community Health Care Plan (CHCP), which provides top tier healthcare services and coverage for those who are ineligible for Medi-Cal. We offer enrollment support during the biannual open enrollment periods.
-
Vision Clinic
In collaboration with the Brentwood Lions Club, we are pleased to provide vision services via a Mobile Vision Clinic at our office. Clients start with a preliminary assessment carried out by a qualified Lion team member. If required, they will be provided with a VSP certificate for a complimentary eye exam, which covers free frames and lenses. HDC is committed to supporting every client by providing them with assistance; i.e.. scheduling appointments with local optometrists, facilitating access to care.
-
Promotoras de Salud Program
In September 2024, the Hijas del Campo Community Health Workers launched the Promotores de Salud program to tackle healthcare disparities faced by migrant and seasonal farmworkers. Under the guidance of HDC’s Health Initiatives Manager, our inaugural cohort of five Promotoras de Salud, who themselves are members of the farmworker community, will undergo training and certification as Community Health Workers (CHWs) through the Aliados Health training program.
